Firozabad native first woman stn manager in Mumbai

Indian Railways decided to hand over the charge of Matunga station located in the heart of Mumbai city to an all-women crew, it chose Firozabad native Mamta Kulkarni to head the group. Bringing laurels to her village Basai in Tundla tehsil, Mamta has set an example by becoming first woman station manager in Mumbai.

She heads the team of 35 railway staff who all are women and manage the busy Matunga station in Mumbai.

“It was a magical feeling when I heard of my appointmen­t as first manager of all women railway station in Mumbai. It was dream come true for me but sense of responsibi­lity prevailed once I joined the station on June 5 this year,” said Mamta while talking to Hindustan Times on Sunday. Mamta is also the first woman station master in Mumbai division of railways and now she is heading allwomen crew which has 11 booking clerks, five RPF personnel and seven ticket collectors besides other railway employees.

Talking about her formative years, Mamta said, “Our family had to move to different cities with transfers of my father who was in railways and retired as joint director at AG office of Railways in Mumbai. In this process, I had my early education in Gwalior and joined Indian Railways in 1992.”

“I do visit my village Basai often where my mother Hemlata Parashar resides,” said Mamta who is based in Mumbai with her husband Vivek Kulkarni who works as a civil engineer. The villagers including her mother and brother Deepak had celebrated her achievemen­t in Basai. After working with railways for almost 25 years, Mamta who is proud of her crew admits that with coordinati­on, the women employees have made the task smooth at Matunga railway station.
