City lad presents his research work on sports to President
Lucknow youth Kanishka Pandey presented his research work on sports to President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan on July 20. ‘Sports: A way of life’ explains how sports played a major role in holistic personality development of the players.
Kanishka, 25, is a former state level badminton player from St Francis College Lucknow. He is now a budding researcher at Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.
“This research is the firstof-its-kind academic work on sports that lays emphasis on national character building through sports and seriously challenges the adage that sports spoil the human being,” he said.
During the 15 minute audience, the President asked him about the content of the work and how it could change the society. The author explained that participating in sports activities from an early age ingrains more than 16 sports values in human beings that help fight depression and instil competitive instincts.
“Besides, these sports values build solid individual character and arm him/her to fight corruption that has plagued our society. It also helps him face difficult time with grace,” he said.
The author sought the President’s help in introducing policies that see sports from a new perspective. For it, Mukherjee asked him to give a proposal for any new sports policy that he thought was necessary so that the same could be forwarded to the government for follow up.
The youth said his research was also translated into many languages to reach wider audiences, adding that Hindi book was already in the market whereas its English version had received consent from a well known foreign publication.
The Sanskrit and Urdu versions of the work are also in progress and soon will go to the press. The research work was formally released by iconic badminton player Pullela Gopichand and UGC chairman Vedprakash a few months back.
Pandey has based his research on autobiographies of various iconic players such as Mike Tyson, Mohammad Ali, Mary Kom, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar to name a few.
He also surveyed depression patients as well as healthy people, sportspersons undergoing training, coaching students in Kota, junior and senior players receiving training in national and state training camps and industrial units and their employees. “You can become a force to reckon with only if you play sports along with your studies,” said Kanishka.
