A oneofitskind classroom by the river

-

For most people in the city, it’s a favourite outdoor destination for a fun evening. But for a bunch of children, wearing little more than rags, the Gomti Riverfront is a classroom.

They sit obediently on stairs, solving mathematical problems, practising English grammar exercises, and asking questions. Their queries are addressed to a young man in his early twenties, who patiently listens and offers solutions.

Siddharth Singh’s daily classes start at 4pm and go on till late evening. “It’s purely the dedication of my students that has put me in this role,” said the computer science graduate from Lucknow University.

Singh remembers that day in June, last year, when a 7-year-old Shanu, who was selling balloons, approached him. “Initially, he asked me to buy balloons, saying it would help him continue studying. And then, he held my hands and requested me to teach him English. I was stunned,” recollected Singh.

“I still wonder why Shanu asked me to teach him when so many people were present.” In the early days, Singh thought the classes would not last long. But he was left amused and amazed with the dedication his small students. “Shanu was regular, so was I. Soon, the strength started getting better, rising up to 12,” he said.

As all students came from families of meagre means, Singh started buying them books and stationery from his savings. “My parents have also assured me of their complete support. But the best reactions have come from my students’ parents. They say they now have expectations from their children,” he shared with delight.

Such is the bonding between Singh and his students that he often helps them sell their balloons and eatables after the class.
