MEERUT: Islamic seminary Darul Uloom of Deoband has banned use of smart phones by its thousands of students. The seminary administration has warned of stringent action against those found violating the order.

Confirming a blanket ban on use of smart phones for students, Maulana Abdul Khaliq Sambhali, nayab mohatmim (deputy vice chancellor) of the seminary, said smart phones distract students from their studies as most of them spend their valuable time in chatting and using other features of the phone. “Therefore, it has been decided to ban the use of smart phones for students on the seminary premises,” he said.

He, however, said that students have permission to keep and use normal mobile phones for making and receiving voice calls.

Seminary officials have been directed to keep a close watch on students so that no body could violate the order. The seminary has over 4,500 students from across India and a few foreign countries. The maulana said no relaxation has been given even to foreign students.
