BAREILLY: A shiksha mitra consumed poison and died during treatment in a private hospital on Wednesday night. The family members have alleged that he was stressed with job uncertainty which forced him to take the extreme step.

“Haresh Yadav, 49, a resident of Usawan area of Badaun, who was admitted to a private hospital here after he consumed sulphas at home, reportedly passed away at the hospital at around 10 pm on Wednesday,” informed senior superintendent of police (SSP), Badaun, Chandra Prakash.

Yadav was employed as an assistant teacher in a government school and was depressed after the apex court ruling. “He worried a lot about his job and future of his family and ended his life because of it,” said Santosh Yadav, a close relative of the family.

Reportedly, the Supreme Court in its decision on Tuesday, upheld the decision of Allahabad high court which cancelled the hiring of shiksha mitras as assistant teachers. The decision, if imposed, will affect over 1.3 lakh shiksha mitras who are currently employed in primary schools across the state.

Yadav’s family has now demanded ex gratia from the state and appealed to the district administration for the same. “He has left behind two children who have nobody to look up to save the government. We want the government to consider it as an accidental death case and provide ex gratia to his family,” Santosh told HT.

The local unions of shiksha mitras have supported the family’s demand. A group of shiksha mitras of Badaun met the family on Friday to assure them of their support. The family members have not lodged any police complaint regarding the suicide.

Meanwhile, office-bearers of Sanyukta Shiksha Mitra Sangharsh Morcha organised a dharna at the collectorate compound in Muzaffarnagar and through BJP MLA Umesh Malik sent a one point memorandum to CM Yogi Aditya Nath, demanding adjustment as teachers.

He said the basic education department would also suffer shortage of school teachers if the shiksha mitras were not adjusted as teachers.A crowd of shiksha mitras also reached at Prakash chowk and demonstrated there.

In Aligarh, shiksha mitras marched in a procession from zila panchayat office towards Marris Road to encircle the residence of state education minister San deep Singh but were stopped by the police.
