Denied admission in BSc, then do BTech instead
Students who are denied admission to BSc courses at the degree colleges due to poor percentage would now be able to get direct admission in engineering colleges. Unbelievable but true!
The Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) has offered admission in B Tech courses to the students with 45% marks at the Intermediate examination.
This arrangement is part of the university’s efforts to get students for the courses. So far, even after six counselling sessions, only 22000 students have taken admission against 1.64 lakh B Tech seats in government and the private engineering colleges.
Online facility for admission in the B Tech courses for the students with second division marks started on Thursday evening.
Counselling coordinator of UPSEE professor Kuldeep Sahai said though the seats in most of the government engineering colleges were full, seats at private engineering colleges were still lying vacant and the government had introduced the scheme in order to fill the seats .
However, teachers at the engineering colleges are not happy. Pleading anonymity many teachers said this would hit the standards and good companies would not come for campus placement.
Besides, as good students would get admission to government engineering colleges during counselling, those with low percentage would approach private engineering colleges. This would affect the academic standards of private colleges, they said.
Also, students who have cleared UPSEE but could not get seat in government colleges would prefer not to join the private colleges.
“We have witnessed poor placement at private engineering colleges. We have to pay very high fee just to get low paid jobs or no jobs at all through campus interview. So better to drop the idea of becoming an engineer,” said Ram Shreshtha and a few others. Interestingly, high fee and poor placements had discouraged even students with a minimum of 48% marks from going for private engineering colleges.
