AHMEDABAD/NEWDELHI: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing leader was arrested on Saturday in connection with the attack on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s car while he was visiting north Gujarat’s flood-affected Banaskantha district on Friday.

The action comes after 18 hours of night-long dharna and demonstration by Congress leaders and scores of district level supporters.

Palanpur unit BJP youth wing general secretary Jayesh Darji was arrested by the Banaskantha district police on Saturday after registering an FIR, which also names three others.

The Congress, meanwhile, has said the “murderous” attack on Rahul Gandhi in Gujarat was “well-planned and well-orchestrated” by BJP-RSS workers, accusing the Centre and state government of failing to provide security to the party vice president guarded by the SPG.

“Being an SPG protectee, it is the duty of the Centre and state government to provide security to Gandhi. But they have completely failed in their responsibility,” leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

Earlier, the Congress V-P again blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) for the attack on his vehicle. “They believe in politics of violence…What to do,” he said.

When pointed out that the PM was yet to condemn the incident, Gandhi remarked, “How will those who carry out such attacks condemn these.”

He also asked party workers to “divert their energy in helping the people affected by floods in the state”.
