CBI visits GSVM, collects data of 2010 batch student
KANPUR: A CBI team probing the multi-crore cash-for-seats Vyapam scam visited the GSVM Medical College here on Saturday and took away the academic records of a 2010 batch student.
They believe the student, identified by his first name —Shishir – was a solver at medical examination and appeared for other students in lieu of money.
Shishir, a student of Medicine Department, has taken the final year examination of the MBBS this year and awaiting results. The CBI sleuths took away his answer sheets to tally his handwriting with the writing in other answer books.
The GSVM principal Navneet Kumar said all required documents were handed over to the CBI.
The team also visited a few coaching institutes in Kakadeo and sought records of three students. The team interrogated students, coaching owners and shop vendors in the area.
The CBI has taken the academic and other records of 1400 students of the GSVM Medical College and 112 students have been interrogated so far. About 70 students were suspected to be involved in the scam. Ten students have been sent to jail so far.
The college has withheld degrees of 40 students who have cleared the MBBS exam but are suspects in the scam.
The students require degrees for their registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI), for pursuing post graduate course or to start private practice.
The college authorities have sought the directives from the MCI and the CBI in connection with giving degrees to these students.
The VYAPAM scam came to light in 2013 with the arrest of 20 people who had come to impersonate candidates for PMT-2009. The arrest was made by the Indore Police. The interrogation had led to the arrest of racket leader Jagdish Sagar. The MP government set up a Special Task Force (STF) on 26 August 2013 to look into the scam.
By 2015 STF arrested about 200 people in connection with the scam. Later in July 2015, the Supreme Court transferred the case to the CBI.
