Sunrise Club enter final in style

Favourites Sunrise Club marched into the final of the District Football League2017, defeating Chowk Sporting by 2-1, at the Chowk Stadium here on Sunday.

Now, they take on defending champions Army Medical Corps (AMC) in the final on Tuesday 4.00 p.m. AMC had 5-3 win against Police Boys Black in the first semi-final.

Dominating the proceeding­s from the very start of play, Sunrise Club forged into lead in the very sixth minute through Ankur, who made no mistake in pushing the ball after dodging a bunch of rival defenders.

Though Chowk Sporting tried to stage a comeback, launching a foray of attacks, aimless shooting made difference to them. However, minutes before the half time, Vinod struck the second goal for the winners in style (2-0).

Even after a change in the ends, Chowk Sporting didn’t lose their heart and kept trying hard. Their repeated efforts paid rich dividends in the 41st minute when left-in Ranji managed to strike a goal to take the score to 1-2.

But, thereafter another goal for them remained elusive as Sunrise Club defenders didn’t allow the Chowk Sporting forwards to add further goal to their account till the final hooter.

NEW FIDE ARBITER

Lucknow’s Hemant Sharma has been awarded the title of FIDE Arbiter by the world chess federation. Hemant Sharma, who has been playing chess since the age of 19 years, has an internatio­nal rating of 2022. He has participat­ed in many national and internatio­nal events. He has also been a part of organizing team of numerous chess events. During the prime time of his chess playing career he represente­d Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh in many national and internatio­nal tourneys.

WEEKLY BRIDGE

Shantanu Rastogi and GK Johri bagged 33 IMP to win the pairs event at the Weekly Bridge Tournament, at the Lucknow Club here. They were followed by AK Sinha-MA Khan (20), GN Mehrotra-Gulab Rai (19), and SA Abbasi-Pravin Agarwal (12). In all, 10 pairs played nine rounds of two boards each. Rastogi and Johri won with a comfortabl­e margin of 13 IMPs averaging 1.83 IMPs.
