Akhilesh announces ₹2 L aid to victims’ family

Former chief minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday announced a financial assistance of ₹2 lakh to families of the children who died at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur due to disruption in the supply of oxygen.

Akhilesh visited Kishun Gupta of Belghat and Brahm Dev Yadav of Baghagad who lost their children in the tragedy. While meeting the aggrieved parents, Akhilesh condoled the deaths and promised all support from his party.

He was also scheduled to visit BRD Medical College but changed the plan and returned to Lucknow. Earlier, addressing a press conference at Sant Kabir Nagar, Akhilesh blamed the government for the deaths of 30 children and reiterated his demand for compensati­on of ₹ 20 lakh to the family of victims.

Asked if CM Yogi should resign, he said: “Why should I ask him to step down? He is a saint. He should feel the pain and should step down on his own.” “We are ready to go to polls if the CM quits and elections are held afresh,” he said Akhliesh said no party should play politics on deaths and added the government should carry out CBI investigat­ion into the case.

SP LEADER BEGINS FASTUNTO-DEATH

SP leaders began a fast-untodeath at the Gandhi statue at Townhall on Monday to press for a CBI probe into the Gorakhpur tragedy. Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha leader Devesh Dubey who, along with his supporters sat on fast unto death, said he would not end his fast till the government accepted his demand for a CBI probe and ₹ 20 lakh compensati­on for the kin of each victim.
