CM surveys floodhit Kheri, orders relief
State, centre in talks with Nepal government to speed up the Pancheshwar dam project, which could regulate the flow of water in rivers
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath said ‘rivers originating from Nepal were causing huge losses of lives and properties in Kheri as well as other districts of the state.’
The CM was addressing a gathering at ONGC health centre compound at Sisaiya, Dhaurahra tehsil after making an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas on Wednesday.
He added both the state and Central government were in talks with Nepal government to speed up the Pancheshwar dam project in the country, which could regulate the flow of water in rivers.
He earlier visited neighbouring Pilibhit and Sitapur district areas that are also affected by floods. Owing to his busy schedule, the chief minister cancelled his proposed visit to the floodravaged Hatwa village by road.
Yogi asked Kheri district authorities to ensure prompt and effective relief to people and said no laxity will be tolerated. Assuring that there will not be any shortage of funds to deal with natural calamities such as floods, the chief minister asked district magistrate Akash Deep not to hesitate in utilising funds whenever required.
“Any laxity in this regard would be taken seriously,” Adityanath said. He asked the authorities to ensure that no loss of human or animal lives was caused by floods.
“Those who have lost their shelter should be given temporary shelters till they are covered under PM Awas Yojana,” he added.He also asked Kheri MPs and legislators to keep a watch on relief work and report directly to him if any laxity came to their notice.
He assured people that the UP government and entire administration was with them in their hour of need.
Stressing that permanent solution to Kheri floods was not a matter of just a few months but of years, the chief minister instructed Kheri DM and irrigation department engineers to prepare a flood control project after the floods were over.
The chief minister later distributed relief cheques and material to several people whose house were destroyed by the raging river Ghagra.
