THE GOVERNMENT SAID THE NOTIFICATION FOR LOCAL BODIES’ ELECTION WILL BE ISSUED ON OCTOBER 25.

ALLAHABAD: The state government on Wednesday informed the Allahabad high court that the local bodies’ elections will be held in November.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by president of Jhunsi nagar palika parishad Ram Lakhan Yadav, a division bench comprising chief justice DB Bhosale and justice MK Gupta directed the state government to complete preparations for local bodies election by October.

The court also directed the state election commission to conduct election in November. The government said the notification for local bodies’ election will be issued on October 25.

The petitioner had challenged the state government order dated July 15 through which the state government decided to appoint administrators at all local bodies in view of the completion of its terms.

The petitioner said Article 83(2) of the Constitution provided that even after completion of the term of house, the previous government would continue to work till the new government takes over.

Likewise, the mayor and chairman of local bodies should also be permitted to work till the new elected body takes charge, he said.

Earlier, the local bodies election were scheduled for June this year but were postponed as the voter list was not ready and the delimitation process was on.

Elections for 14 nagar nigams, 2012 nagar palika parishads and 438 nagar panchayats are scheduled to be held in the state.
