Clerics have come out in support of the district administration’s ban on sacrificing camel in the state capital on the occasion of Bakrid. They have appealed to Muslims to co-operate with the district administration and not hurt any one’s religious sentiments.

The reaction came a day after the district administration announced ban on the sacrifice of camels on the occasion of Bakrid.

On Friday, the district administration had also directed police to keep tab on the sale and purchase of the camels within the city limits. DM Kaushal Raj Sharma had also directed the intelligence units to keep track of groups from Rajasthan who moved in east UP to sell their camels on Bakrid.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong in the ban. Muslims should support the government in the cause and not do anything that hurts anyone’s religious sentiments,” said Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, Imam Eidgah, Lucknow.

Maulana also said that at the time of ‘qurbani’ (sacrificing), Muslims should ensure that the blood of the animal was not drained in manholes. “It is often observed that some people throw away the waste of the animals in the open , which is a wrong practice. Instead, they should bury the waste and blood to minimise pollution and maintain hygiene in the vicinity,” he added.

Syed Saif Abbas Naqvi, president of Shia Chand Committee too advocated the move, saying people should ensure that on the festival they do not hurt anyone’s religious sentiments. “Besides, there are other animals to sacrifice, hence they should not make it an issue,” he added.
