Battle for ‘supremacy’ continues in cricket body

LUCKNOW: There seems to be no headway in the battle for supremacy in the Cricket Association Lucknow (CAL) as the deputy registrar, firms, societies and chits have reportedly asked the warring factions to prove their authenticity within a month.

Both the factions have submitted their claims to deputy registrar SK Maurya on Tuesday and the issue is likely to be sorted out within a month as Navneet Sehgal-led CAL has sought time to furnish the accounts details of last 42 years.

“We have been given a month’s time to submit the accounts details. I am sure things will go our way,” CAL secretary KM Khan told HT on Wednesday. “We have already started the process of managing records as soon as possible,” he said.

Khan, however, said CAL would hold its annual general meeting before the UPCA’s AGM in the last week on September and decide the date of elections.

“The issue of meeting was discussed today and I have plans to hold it before the UPCA’s AGM,” said Khan, who has been the secretary of the cricketing body for the last 23 years.

In all, 70 clubs out of 116 units of CAL would be entitled to cast their votes in the election as these were part of the two seasons’ league, conducted by the cricketing body as per the constitution.

All the activities, especially matches and on ground activities of the CAL, has reportedly been stopped ‘unofficially’ for the last few months after the officials of a local club allegedly disrupted the selection trials of juniors, by staging a demonstration at the ground.

CAL went on to host its annual function almost after a gap of five years in July and distributed cash awards to all deserving, including the club whose officials were creating problems. But this didn’t bring any respite to them and other faction is still up in the arms against the CAL, and not letting any activity happen.

The CAL officials allegedly failed to get the renewal of the association done as per the rule and only last month, one Mohd Nawab, who claimed himself to be the joint secretary of CAL (during its establishment in 1974-75) was given the rights of the cricketing body by the registrar firms societies.

The CAL authorities submitted the affidavits of seven officials, who were part of the genuine body in 1974-75, to the registrar firms societies and get the proceedings halted for now.

Sources confirmed as per the constitution of CAL, holding of AGM is a must every year and the election should take place once after three years. The last elections of the cricket body took place in 2005, and Navneet Sehgal has been the president of the body since 2002.
