LUCKNOW: In a bizarre incident, a notorious criminal bit off a police constable’s thumb to free himself from his custody inside the Satkandha police outpost in Old City on Friday.

Constable Mukesh Kumar’s thumb got separated from his hand. Doctors at KGMU’s trauma centre could not rejoin the thumb as the accused had badly chewed it too.

The accused, Humayun, was arrested and later sent to jail.

“An FIR under IPC sections for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, to deter public servant from duty and issuing threat has been lodged,” said Deepak Dubey, inspector, Thakurganj police station.

He said Humayun allegedly demanded extortion money from one Abbas Ali, who sells toy cars near the Clock Tower park, in front of Chhota Imambada.

“Humayun has been troubling Abbas Ali for past few days and did the same on Friday,” said Dubey.

“Two police personnel were rushed to the spot and Humayun was brought to the Satkhanda police station. Here, he entered into a verbal duel with the complainant. When Kumar objected to it, Humayun started using abusive language inside the outpost,” said the inspector.

“While trying to free himself, Humayun bit off Kumar’s right hand thumb,” said the inspector.

The cop was immediately rushed to hospital but the doctors failed to re-attach his thumb. He said the FIR against Humayun has been lodged on the complaint of Satkhanda outpost in charge Arun Yadav.

Humayun has over eight criminal cases, including that of attempt to murder and extortion, against him. His name had also surfaced in the sectarian clash reported in the Old City around two years back.
