Criminal involved in dacoity, gang rape hurt in police firing
LUCKNOW: A dreaded criminal, who was involved in dacoity at a carpenter’s house and gangrape with his minor daughter in 2016, was critically injured in an encounter with the police in Sarojini Nagar here on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Police said that the criminal, Udai Raj, who carried a reward of ₹15000, was injured in the retaliatory firing by the police team.
The criminal was on run since his involvement surfaced in the dacoity and gangrape with the 12-year-old on in Para area here on September 28, 2016. Acting on a tip-off about his presence in the area, the police team went to arrest Udai, said senior superintendent of police (SSP), Deepak Kumar.
The SSP said that Udai opened fire on the police team after finding himself surrounded. He added that due to the bullet proof jackets, two sub-inspectors, Arun Singh and Udai Pratap Singh, safely survived the gun shots fired by Udai during the encoun- ter. The SSP said the criminal was shot at in his right thigh while he tried to escape taking advantage of darkness.
He said the accused fell down after sustaining bullet injury following which he was arrested and rushed to the hospital.
He said Udai Raj was the member of dreaded gang involved in multiple dacoities.
The members of this gang were also involved in raping women in the house where they committed dacoities, added the SSP.
