Sharda poses erosion threat in Pallia

LAKHIMPUR KHERI: The Nayapurwa, Deshraj Tanda, Dhakhia and villages were exposed to the threat of the Sharda river eroding more houses and agricultur­al lands in Pallia tehsil of Lakhimpur Kheri district on Sunday.

Pallia sub divisional magistrate ID Dwivedi said a close watch was being kept on the situation and revenue officials were instructed to provide immediate relief to families of victims.

Meanwhile, irrigation department officials have piled up bamboo crates and sandbags along the side of an embankment near Milpurwa to save it from the fury of the Sharda river. Already, the Ghaghra river has eroded agricultur­al and residentia­l land in Dhaurahra tehsil.

WOMAN JUMPS INTO CANAL WITH SON

A woman tied her two- year-old son to her waist and jumped into the overflowin­g Sharda canal near Laukhaniya village under Dhaurahra police station on Sunday.

Villagers working in neighbouri­ng fields spotted the woman but before they could reach her, she jumped into the canal. Divers were deployed to fish out the bodies. The deceased were identified as Sudha, 30, and her son Akash, 2 of Nakaiya village. The woman’s in-laws and parents rushed to the spot but could not explain the reason for the extreme step.

The bodies were handed over to the family members after post- mortem, Dhaurahra police station incharge Brijesh Tripathi told HT.
