Bayern see off Bremen thanks to Lewandowski double
BERLIN: Late goals in quick succession by Robert Lewandowski gave defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich their second straight win with a 2-0 victory at Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Bremen’s last win over Bayern was in 2006, but the hosts held their star-studded opponents until the 72nd minute when Lewandowski first struck.
The Poland hot-shot audaciously flicked Kingsley Coman’s low cross into the net with his heel before doubling the damage by firing through the legs of defender Robert Bauer and Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka on 75 minutes.
INTER BEAT ROMA
MILAN: Mauro Icardi scored a second-half brace as Inter Milan rocked Roma 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday to send out an early-season statement of intent to their Serie A title rivals.
An early opener from Edin Dzeko, Serie A’s top scorer last season with 29 goals, had a packed Olimpico jumping in anticipation of Roma starting their home campaign with a win.
But the hosts, playing under the watchful eye of new club director Francesco Totti, were stunned into silence in a thrilling second half.
AGUERO CLEARED
BOURNEMOUTH: An accusation that Man City striker Sergio Aguero struck a stadium steward while celebrating the winning goal in his side’s 2-1 victory at Bournemouth on Saturday has been withdrawn. Stewards and police intervened to prevent fans spilling onto the pitch after sterling scored a late winner and in a statement made to police after the game, a steward claimed he was hit by Aguero.
