LUCKNOW: Avadh Girls’ Degree College in association with Isha Foundation organised a screening and awareness session in support of the nationwide campaign - ‘Rally for Rivers’ - on Monday.

Around 1,500 students took pledge to support the campaign and work towards saving the rivers in India.

Principal Upma Chaturvedi said, “If we want to live peacefully, we have to support our environment. Rivers are the arteries of our environment and we should work together to save them. I support ‘Rally for rivers’ and request you to do so as well.”

Students and teachers also gave missed calls on the number 8000980009 to show their support for the campaign.

Guest speaker, Gaurav Prakash of Universal Book Sellers and chairman, PHD Chamber of Commerce, said “Civilisations have vanished because of scarcity of water. It is time to stop criticising and start acting. We should all stand together.”

The Isha foundation has been working towards galvanising public support, raising awareness, and building momentum towards rejuvenating perennial rivers such as Cauvery and Narmada, which have shrunk by 40-50%.

The foundation will present its action plan to the government on October 2, 2017, when the rally, after travelling 7,000 km, culminates in Delhi. In a build-up to that event, it has been decided to celebrate September 1 as ‘Rivers' Day’.

Sadhguru, the founder of Isha Foundation, launched ‘Rally for Rivers’ to create awareness about the urgent need to rejuvenate Indian rivers. To create mass awareness, he will drive from Kanyakumari to the Himalayas, travelling through 16 states. The campaign will include 21 major events and many smaller ones.

The initiative has the support of 13 chief ministers and celebrities from all walks of life.
