Gorakhpur hosp tragedy: NBW against seven

GORAKHPUR: A local court on Friday issued a non-bailable warrant against seven accused in the BRD Medical College case following an applicatio­n by the police. These seven are among the nine accused in the Gorakhpur tragedy in which over 30 children died due to disruption in oxygen supply at the BRD Medical College on August 10 and 11.

These seven are among the nine accused in the Gorakhpur tragedy in which over 30 children died due to disruption in oxygen supply at the BRD Medical College on August 10 and 11.

The accused include two officials of the oxygen supplier Pushpa Sales Pvt Ltd, Manish Bhandari and Udai Pratap Sharma, two BRD Medical college doctors, Dr Satish Kumar (the then head of the anesthesia department), Dr Kafeel Khan (the then nodal officer of the 100bed acute encephalit­is syndrome ward) and three BRD Medical College employees Gajanan Jaiswal (chief pharmacist) Sudhir Kumar Pandey (junior clerk) and Sanjay Kumar Tripathi (assistant clerk).

Only two of the nine accused have been arrested so far. The duo — former medical college principal Dr Rajiv Mishra and his wife Dr Purnima Shukla — are now in judicial custody.

The FIR against all the nine accused was lodged at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station on August 23. The case was later transferre­d to Gorakhpur.

Senior superinten­dent of police Siddhartha Anirudh Pankaj said: “We had asked the family members of the accused to ensure that the accused appeared before the police to record their statements but that didn’t happen even after expiry of the deadline. So today, NBW has been obtained against seven accused.”

THE FIR AGAINST ALL THE NINE ACCUSED WAS LODGED AT LUCKNOW’S HAZRATGANJ POLICE STATION ON AUG 23. THE CASE WAS TRANSFERRE­D TO GORAKHPUR LATER.
