LUCKNOW: The state government is likely to give an extension to DGP Sulkhan Singh, who retires on September 30.

Earlier, the state government had given an indication that it will amend the previous government’s policy of giving extension to retired bureaucrats and instead give new officers chance.

But then it gave extension to four senior officers - secretary, Home, Mani Prasad Mishra, special secretary confidential department Krishna Gopal, staff officers of chief secretary SN Srivastava and RD Paliwal. The four officers were already on extension and got extension for another three months on August 31.

Talking to HT, a senior officer said, “since the state government has amended its policy and granted extension to four bureaucrats, the DGP might also get extension of three months”.

A 1980 batch IPS officer, Sulkhan Singh was appointed DGP on April 21.

“The extension will depend on his performance before he retires as law and order is among the top agenda of the CM,” the officer said .

Meanwhile, the IPS officers of 1982 to 1987 batch who have been promoted to DG rank are indulging in hectic lobbying to grab the coveted post. Officers of UP cadre on central deputation are also in the race for the post.

Talking to HT, former DGP Prakash Singh said, “If the state government wishes to work for long term change, it must give minimum two years term to the DGP irrespective of superannuation.”
