ALLAHABAD : A major tragedy was averted when a railway employee spotted a damaged bolster spring in one of the coaches of NorthEast Express soon after the train left Allahabad junction on Sunday evening.

The incident took place a day after newly-appointed chairman of the railway board, Ashwini Lohani, visited Allahabad.

As soon as the train left Allahabad junction, carriage/rolling staff member Krishna Kumar Gupta found a broken bolster spring in S9 coach of the NorthEast Express (12505) and immediately informed his supervisor KM Tripathi who passed on the information to the control room.

Used as a secondary suspension, a bolster spring is an important component on which the entire weight of the coach rests.

The train was taken back to platform 3 where station manager Rajaram Rajpoot, engineers and other officials examined the affected bogie.

The bogie was then decoupled from the train and a replacement was attached to the guard’s coach. All the passengers were shifted to the new bogie after which the train resumed its journey at 9.40pm. The station manager said all the bogies were checked properly before allowing the train to resume its journey.
