A 45-year-old woman was brutally stabbed to death by her stepson over property dispute in a crowded locality under Ghazipur police area here on Tuesday afternoon.

The accused stayed in the house after committing the crime and later, surrendered before the police after informing his elder brother, who is a police constable in UP Police.

The deceased was identified as Mehser Jahan, 45, a resident of B-Block, Sarovodaya Nagar. Three years ago, she married the accused Shiraz’s father, Shafatullah Khan, who is also a police constable in the police recruitment board.

Shafatullah has two sons, Shamim and Shiraz, from his first marriage and Mehser also has two kids, a son and a daughter, from her first marriage.

Locals said Mehser along with Shafatullah stayed on the ground floor of the double storey house while the two brothers stayed on the first floor of the house.

Shamim, who is a police constable and presently posted in UP 100, police emergency response centre, is married and has two kids while Shiraj was unmarried.

Senior sub-inspector (SSI) of Ghazipur police station, Om Prakash Tewari said the initial probe suggests that Shiraj had strained relations with his stepmother as she was allegedly trying to throw him out of the house and mounting pressure on his father to keep her children only in the house.

On Monday, Shiraj had a confrontation with his stepmother over the same issue. The SSI said Shiraj returned home in drunken state on Tuesday evening and attacked Mehser with a sharp edged knife.

He said the accused first slit the woman’s throat and thereafter stabbed her multiple times till she died. He said Shiraj’s father and brother were on their duty when the incident took place.

He said Shiraj’s brother Shamim rushed home after being informed about the incident.

Shamim informed the police and made his brother surrender, said the SSI adding that the body was sent for post-mortem examination and further probe was on.
