The GSVM Medical College here may lose some seats in important departments as a fourmember team of Medical Council of India (MCI) has expressed concern over poor facilities at the institute.

The team had come on two-day inspection and left on Wednesday.

It comprised members from different states, including team leader Dr Bharta Jain of Gwalior Medical College, Dr Sudeba Sahai of Neelratan Sarkar Medical College Kolkata, Dr Apporva Pawde of Government Medical College, Mumbai and Dr Jayashri Devi of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad Medical College, Assam.

The team found acute shortage of medical and non-medical staff at the college. They were stunned to see that at LLR Hospital— the biggest hospital of the GSVM Medical College-- a single nurse was looking after 34 patients. Sources said as against 800 nurses there were only 167 staff nurses at the hospital. The team members were told that no fresh posts for nursing staff could be created during the past 50 years despite rise in number of patients.

The team was also amazed to know that associate and assistant professors were made the head of the departments for want of eligible professors. Besides, the team found that against 265 teachers there were only 167 teachers and against 49 professors there were only 12 professors in the college.

The team has also sought affidavits from the doctors on leave.

GSVM principal Dr Navneet Kumar said the required information has been submitted to the team as there was complete transparency in the system. It is feared that on the basis of the MCI report the GSVM may lose some seats in departments like medicine, anesthesia and paediatrics.
