Wanted criminal arrested after encounter

BAREILLY : A police sub-inspector was shot at by an absconding accused in Bithri area of Bareilly on Tuesday night. The incident resulted in an encounter and the accused was eventually arrested by the police.

“We were on a night patrol when we spotted the accused near a culvert. He looked suspicious and when we asked him to identify himself he opened fire and tried to flee from the spot,” said Shyam Singh, S-I, who was injured in the incident.

He informed the control room about the incident, after which additional police force was sent to the spot. The accused was arrested after a brief encounter. Police recovered a country-made pistol and two cartridges from him.

“He (accused) received a gunshot injury in his right leg. He was later identified as Sumit Patel who is listed as wanted and carried a reward of ₹5,000 for his arrest,” said Rohit Singh Sajwan, superinten­dent of police (Bareilly). Patel is a resident of Izzatnagar area of Bareilly and is wanted by Izzatnagar Police station in a list of criminal cases.

Police registered a fresh case against Patel at Bithri Chainpur police station following the encounter. He was charged under relevant sections of Arms Act and the IPC. The encounter was in line with the ongoing crackdown of UP Police on criminals in the state.
