BJP takes ‘Swachh’ mes­sage to schoolkids

VARANASI: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kashi re­gion unit on Satur­day ap­prised stu­dents of gov­ern­ment-run pri­mary schools in Varanasi about Prime Min­is­ter Naren­dra Modi’s clean­li­ness mis­sion ahead of his birth­day on Sun­day.

Chief min­is­ter Yogi Adityanath will also par­tic­i­pate in events to mark the birth­day cel­e­bra­tions in Varanasi, the PM’s Lok Sabha con­stituency.The CM will dis­trib­ute cer­tifi­cates to 1400 safai mi­tras, un­der­lin­ing their im­por­tance in the clean­li­ness mis­sion. Ur­ban de­vel­op­ment min­is­ter Suresh Khanna ad­min­is­tered a clean­li­ness oath to 760 vil­lage heads, Varanasi MLAs and of­fi­cials here on Satur­day.

The Kashi re­gion BJP pres­i­dent Lax­man Acharya told HT, “We have de­cided to cel­e­brate PM Modi’s birth­day in a grand man­ner. As part of the cel­e­bra­tions, we de­cided to make chil­dren aware of PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat mis­sion. We vis­ited schools and dis­trib­uted sweets, erasers and pen­cils among the stu­dents.”

“Modi ji is the prime min­is­ter. There­fore, chil­dren should know about him,” Acharya said, adding that BJP lead­ers sought per­mis­sion from head­mas­ters for the brief event be­fore visit­ing the schools. Af­ter due ap­proval by the head masters, the ac­tiv­ity was car­ried out in 130 gov­ern­ment schools, he added.

Acharya said some of the chil­dren were al­ready aware of the on­go­ing clean­li­ness cam­paign.

The chil­dren of­fered sweets to pic­tures of Modi kept in these schools. Suresh Gupta, a BJP leader, said, “We cel­e­brated Modiji’s birth­day with chil­dren at the Ja­gat­ganj pri­mary school. We gave them sweets, erasers and pen­cils. We also ap­prised them of Swach­hta Hi Seva Hai campign.”

The chil­dren were told about the do’s and don’ts that ev­ery­one should fol­low to main­tain clean­li­ness, he added.

Sixty-seven in­ter­sec­tions across the city have been dec­o­rated in the colours of the BJP flag. The party work­ers will carry out clean­li­ness in their re­spec­tive ar­eas for two hours on Sun­day.
