1987 World Cup AUSTRALIA WIN

The tie, played at Chennai, was marred by a controvers­y that had a huge bearing on the outcome. A hit from Dean Jones landed behind Ravi Shastri at long-on. Umpire Dickie Bird signalled a four. Australia were unhappy and they approached India captain Kapil Dev who agreed to it being declared a six. Australia now had 270/6. India were out for 269 in the final over, just one run short.

1998 tri-series final WAUGH IMPRESSES

In those days when totals in mid 200s were considered at-par, India challenged Australia with a target of 228 in the final of the Pepsi Cup 1998-99 at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, Delhi. Ricky Ponting (41) and Michael Bevan (75) set the tone for the chase before Steve Waugh came up with a 54-ball 57 to help Australia to a four-wicket win.

2009 series SACHIN’S 175 IN VAIN

Months before he eventually breached the 200-run mark in ODIs, Tendulkar looked set to create that record at Hyderabad. Chasing 351, he towered over the rest of the India batsmen — who had registered seven single-digit scores — scoring an unbeaten 175 out of India’s 347. India failed Tendulkar when they could not get past the final hurdle, losing by a mere three runs.

2011 World Cup quarters INDIA KNOCK OUT OZ

India handed Ricky Ponting’s team a crushing defeat in the quarters. Ponting came up with a splendid ton, powering Australia to 260/6. In reply, Tendulkar (53) and Gautam Gambhir (50) soaked in the early pressure. Even though the hosts lost a few quick wickets, Yuvraj Singh (57*) and Suresh Raina (34*) took them to victory.

Capitalisi­ng on the short boundaries at Chinnaswam­y Stadium, Rohit stroked his way into record books, becoming the 3rd batsman to score an ODI double ton, scoring 209. Set to get 384 to win, Faulkner hammered 116; Shane Watson hit 49, and Glenn Maxwell 60. However India clinched the game and the seven-match series 3-2.
