MEMORABLE MATCHES
1987 World Cup AUSTRALIA WIN
The tie, played at Chennai, was marred by a controversy that had a huge bearing on the outcome. A hit from Dean Jones landed behind Ravi Shastri at long-on. Umpire Dickie Bird signalled a four. Australia were unhappy and they approached India captain Kapil Dev who agreed to it being declared a six. Australia now had 270/6. India were out for 269 in the final over, just one run short.
1998 tri-series final WAUGH IMPRESSES
In those days when totals in mid 200s were considered at-par, India challenged Australia with a target of 228 in the final of the Pepsi Cup 1998-99 at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, Delhi. Ricky Ponting (41) and Michael Bevan (75) set the tone for the chase before Steve Waugh came up with a 54-ball 57 to help Australia to a four-wicket win.
2009 series SACHIN’S 175 IN VAIN
Months before he eventually breached the 200-run mark in ODIs, Tendulkar looked set to create that record at Hyderabad. Chasing 351, he towered over the rest of the India batsmen — who had registered seven single-digit scores — scoring an unbeaten 175 out of India’s 347. India failed Tendulkar when they could not get past the final hurdle, losing by a mere three runs.
2011 World Cup quarters INDIA KNOCK OUT OZ
India handed Ricky Ponting’s team a crushing defeat in the quarters. Ponting came up with a splendid ton, powering Australia to 260/6. In reply, Tendulkar (53) and Gautam Gambhir (50) soaked in the early pressure. Even though the hosts lost a few quick wickets, Yuvraj Singh (57*) and Suresh Raina (34*) took them to victory.
2013 series ROHIT SLAMS 209
Capitalising on the short boundaries at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Rohit stroked his way into record books, becoming the 3rd batsman to score an ODI double ton, scoring 209. Set to get 384 to win, Faulkner hammered 116; Shane Watson hit 49, and Glenn Maxwell 60. However India clinched the game and the seven-match series 3-2.
