Cong workers sell fuel at subsidised rates in protest
To protest steep hike in the price of petrol and diesel, the Uttar Pradesh Congress workers sold fuel to commuters at subsidised rate near Vidhan Bhawan on Sunday.
The party workers brought about 40 litres petrol and diesel in a jar and sold it in 500 ml plastic bottles at Rs 36 and Rs 28 per litre.
Some of the commuters happily bought fuel from them.
The Congress workers deliberately chose to stage a protest on Sunday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is celebrating the 67th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the country.
“The protest aimed at opposing the increase in central excise duty on petrol and diesel that has led to a steep hike in its prices,” said Congress secretary Shailendra Tiwari.
“The BJP is celebrating PM’s birthday across the country but it should also think how the prices of essential commodities have gone up due to increase in petrol and diesel prices,” he said.
“The idea is not to only lodge protest but also to create awareness among the people about the soaring price of petrol at a time when the prices have gone down in the international market,” a party worker said.
In the first week of August, the UP Congress staged a protest against the soaring prices of tomatoes to draw the attention of the government towards the hardship faced by the people.
