MONDAL HAD MARRIED A RAPE SURVIVOR AND TOOK UPON HIMSELF THE RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE HIS WIFE GOT JUSTICE.

MALDA: A youth fighting to get justice for his rape survivor wife was stabbed to death in Malda district. Police have arrested two of the three accused, including the rape survivor’s brother but the main accused was still at large till Sunday evening.

Dulal Mondal, 29, whose body was found on Sunday morning in a river at Hiranandapur-Nanditola village within Bhutni police station limits, was missing since Friday evening when he went to a market near his in-laws’ place, along with his brother-in-law, Rajkumar Chowdhury.

Mondal had married a rape survivor six years ago and took upon himself the responsibility to ensure his wife got justice. The woman had lodged a complaint against one Siddhartha Mondal after the alleged incident of rape in 2011. However, it was after her marriage that her husband moved court, accusing the police of inaction. “Over the past six years, Dulal and his wife faced threat from Siddhartha several times. The couple was under pressure from the rape accused for withdrawing the case in court,” said Nabonil Mondal, a cousin of the deceased. Earlier this week, Dulal Mondal went to his in-laws’ place with his wife. On Friday evening, he went to a local market with his brother in-law. After a few hours, the brother in-law returned home. He said they came under attack from Sidhartha and his associate, Krishna Chowdhury, who forcefully took Dulal away and may have killed him. “Rajkumar said that Siddhartha and Krishna dragged them to a local orchard and started beating them up. He somehow managed to flee but Dulal could not. However, there seems to be many discrepancies in his story,” said Nabonil.
