KOLKATA: BJP leaders and workers in West Bengal, on Sunday, celebrated Prime Minister, Narenadra Modi’s birthday by initiating a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan close to chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat in South Kolkata.
Senior BJP leaders like Kailash Vijayvargiya, party Rajya Sabha member and actressturned politician, Roopa Ganguly were among other leaders who initiated the programme on Sunday morning. ”
Addressing media persons while initiating the function, Vijayvargiya criticised Banerjee and state administration for neglecting the famous Kalighat temple, which is at stone throwing distance from her residence.
“Kalighat temple is one of the mosts popular pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The temple comes under the jurisdiction of the assembly constituency where from the chief minister is elected. But the temple is thoroughly neglected and hence we have chosen this place to initiate Swachh Bharat Abhijan on this auspicious day,” Vijayvargiya said.
Ganguly was extremely critical of the waste disposal arrangements at Kalighat temple. “Thousands of pilgrims offer Puja with flowers at this temple every day. The temple urgently need an eco- friendly disposal system. Plastics should be banned within the temple complex. But the chief minister is totally ignorant on such things,” the actress- turned- politician said.
The BJP leaders present there also attacked the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Sovan Chatterjee.
“It is the responsibility of KMC and mayor to maintain the cleanliness of the famous temple. But where is the time for the mayor now...” said BJP leader Joy Banerjee.
