Three militants killed in encounter near LoC

SRINAGAR: Three militants were killed in an ongoing encounter with the security forces in north Kashmir’s Uri area, near the Line of Control (LoC) on Sunday morning, an army spokespers­on said. Army sources said it foiled an infiltrati­on bid by gunning down two armed intruders in Uri.

In another incident, three security personnel suffered minor injuries when militants lobbed a grenade at their vehicle at Sopore Chowk in the state’s Baramulla district on Sunday morning. Two policemen and a CR PF jaw ans were injured in the grenade explosion.

According to a police spokespers­on, an alert special police officer (SPO) threwawayt­hegre- nade that landed inside their vehicle to a safer place, saving lives of many security personnel and civilians. The gun battle in Uri, also in Baramulla district, ensued when army on Saturday night spotted a suspicious movement of militants in the Kalgai area and laid a cordon. Sources said at least three militants were holed up in the area. An army official said, “Terrorists have been cordoned, and operations are in progress.” Further details are awaited. The border town of Uri had made headlines in Sep- tember last year when four militants had entered an army camp and killed 19 soldiers, before being gunned down.

NIA TO QUIZ TWO IN TERROR FUNDING CASE

The National Investigat­ion Agency has summoned a prominent trade associatio­n leader of Kashmir and a research scholar at the Kashmir University in connection with the ongoing probe into alleged funding of anti-national activities in the strife-torn Valley.

Mohammad Yasin Khan, who heads the Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) and Kashmir Traders and Manufactur­ers Federation (KTMF), and Aala Fazili, a research scholar at the pharmaceut­ical sciences department of KU, are scheduled to appear at NIA headquarte­rs in New Delhi on Monday.
