VARANASI: Security at International Girls’ Hostel, which accommodates 64 foreigners, cries for the attention of BHU authorities.

The hostel has only one employee who single-handedly manages the affairs. There is no one to record the details of visitors. Poor security arrangements have left the inmates concerned for their security.

“There is no security during the day time. The hostel has only one security guard who reaches after sunset,” the inmates said.

A girl student, on condition of anonymity, said: “Security arrangements at the hostel are insufficient. Often boys enter the hostel premises. In the past, boys even entered the rooms of the girls. They argued with the girls when they asked them to leave the premises.”

“Boys often pass objectionable comments but we ignore them. We don’t want to get into any problem. We are here for studies,” a girl said, adding it would be better, if proper security arrangements were made at the hostel. Six CCTV cameras have been set up at the hostel.

“Will CCTV cameras stop anyone from entering the premises? There should be proper arrangements for our security,” an inmate said. Till a few months back, some visitors to a building

behind the hostel made obscene gestures to girls. As a result, they stopped going on the roof top. After the situation became unbearable, some girls met the chief proctor and lodged a complaint in this connection.

After the proctor took action in the matter, that such incidents stopped. The hostel has inmates from Nepal, Bhutan, Fiji and some other countries. The inmates said while their hostel lacked security, a boys hostel in the vicinity had all the arrangements. “A guard remains on duty during day hours. He records details of each and every visitor. But there is no such facility here,” an inmate said.

“We have chalked out a plan to enhance security on the campus. So far as International Girls’ Hostel is concerned, some streetlights have been installed. A keeper-cum-guard is already deployed at the hostel who looks after security arrangements. We will further enhance security, if required,” BHU spokesperson Dr Rajesh Singh said.
