KANPUR: The prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) faced a 10% drop in campus placements that took place between December 2016 and March 2017.

According to the All IIT placement report prepared by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, (IIT-B), placements dropped considerably due to drastic changes that the economic scenario witnessed during the period.

As per the report, in 2016-2017 the IITs saw only 66% campus placement as against 76% in 2015-2016.

The report, however, indicated that there was a possibility of an increase in campus placement in 2017-18.

As per the trends, in the current year there has been an increase in pre placements at the IITs.

At IIT-K and IIT-B, an increase of 40% and 60% pre placements is expected.

The placement process would start from December 2017 amid hopes that the pre-placement trend would continue to hold ground.

The report observed that the job opportunities were higher for M Tech and the students doing dual degree course from IITs. Over 70% students doing M Tech and dual degree courses got good placement at the IT based engineering companies.

On the other hand, only 30% B Tech students could get placements in the consultancy companies. More so, students of computer science and engineering (CSE) were offered good packages by the IT Software companies. And 80% students of CSE got placement on a lucrative package of over 13 lakh.

The chairman of the Students’ Placement Office Professor Shyam Nayar said it was expected that more prestigious companies would come for campus placement which is to start from December.

“We believe the placement would be better and the students will get better packages and jobs,” he said.
