Why women are treated like objects?

- Dr Sadaf Fareed (VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE PERSONAL)

Women are considered physically vulnerable and as weaker sex in almost every phase of life, whether it is within the family or at the work place.

Although with the passage of time the condition of women has improved, yet the general ideology about femininity expects women to be passive and submissive.

This discrimination against women includes infliction of physical, mental or sexual suppression.

Since the very beginning in our patriarchal society, women have been seen as objects that are there to serve the so called ‘superior’ men. This objectification of women can be easily seen in every sphere of life; even the highly paid jobs also are not free from this ‘ideology of objectification’.

If we talk about the advertisements, they too are no exception.

Most of the ads use women only to satisfy the male gaze as ours is a male centric society and therefore the preferred spectators are essentially men.

A large number of advertisements use women as erotic passive spectacle; although the product has nothing to do with them.

This idea further places women within the category of ‘a glamour object’.

This issue of female objectification is primarily a result of the perception that a woman remains solely her father’s or husband’s ownership.

This mental blockage of the society has strengthened the tendency of seeing women as objects.

Though the present era has empowered women in many possible ways and the problem of social inequality has reduced, yet it would be an escapist view to think that such objectification of women will completely come to an end in near future.

We still need to amend this asymmetrical social system to bring about a significant transformation in the status of women.
