LUCKNOW: After the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took the lead in announcing a candidate for the mayoral election, its candidate Priyanka Maheshwari became the first to hit the campaign trail by meeting the electorate in Begum Hazart Mahal ward on Sunday.
The party’s candidate for corporator’s post from the ward, Imtiyaz Khan, accompanied Maheshwari.
“AAP has been fighting to expose rampant corruption in Lucknow Municipal Corporation for the past several years,” Maheshwari told people.
“BJP has failed to address civic issues despite having a mayor and majority in the LMC,” she added.
“There is rampant corruption in LMC. My first priority will be to rid this civic body of corruption,” she said.
Maheshwari also promised to cut by half house tax and water tax and starting ‘mohalla clinics’ on the lines of New Delhi.
“Through RTI, AAP exposed corruption in LMC in e-tendering process. But even then no action has been taken against any of the engineers responsible for the scam,” she said.
In August last year, AAP leader Gaurav Maheshwari had filed 330 RTI pleas in the LMC. Later, AAP filed another set of 330 RTI applications with LMC. Through these 660 RTIs pleas, the AAP had sought details of the money spent on development projects in all 110 wards of Lucknow by the civic body.
All the information sought by AAP was related to the financial year 2015-16. The party also took out ‘padyatras’ in all the 110 wards last year.
AAP had also taken the RTI route in New Delhi to expose “corruption” in the then Delhi government led by chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
