Be ‘smart’ while using phone: Cyber expert to bizmen
LUCKNOW: Are we smart enough to use our smart phone, our 24x7 companion? This question put forth by an ethical hacker and cyber crime expert, Saket Modi, reveals the flip side of using the gadget that keeps you connected and entertained throughout the day.
Modi, who was giving a presentation on cyber security for digital age entrepreneurs, briefly explained through a hacking demo that the smart phones protected with the password were also not actually protected.
He said most of the victims of cyber crimes taking place through smart phones were digital age entrepreneurs.
The programme was organised by UP Chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organisation (EO) in Lucknow on Saturday. The EO is a global community of over 12,000 entrepreneurs, distributed in 170 chapters in 53 countries.
“There have been 27,482 cases in India in the first six months of 2017 itself with the average of one incident every 10 minutes. UP and Maharashtra are the worst hit states in cyber crimes. Nearly 80% of such cases go unsolved as hackers use servers based outside the country. And the small scale businesses are just as much at risk as big ones,” Modi explained.
He said the hackers could easily access smart phones by taking some general information from the user while interacting over phone posing as banking or insurance agents.
The expert gave some basic tips to strengthen privacy settings and updating the phone with free of cost security applications

available online. He shared many security measures like not sharing your machinery (phones, laptops, etc) with anybody else.
“For banking safety, use authentication and never share your one time password (OTP) with people over phone. Banks will never refund your money if OTP is shared,” he said, adding people should use phenomenal government applications like BHIM which had multi-layer security. He also suggested use of government sponsored Rupay credit and debit card as it deals in Indian currency which cannot be hacked outside India.
Tanya Rastogi, a member of Entrepreneurs’ Organisation (EO), said, “As business owners, we are threatened daily by looming dangers of ransom wares. If we become more updated in tackling cyber threat, it will lead us to manage our IT infra and overall business better and be future ready”.
