KANPUR: After getting in-principle nod from the divisional commissioner Kanpur is all set to become the first city in the state to roll out bike taxis making local transport, especially for the single commuters, a little easy.

While the modalities are being worked out exact date of the roll out would be decided soon, said a source from the regional transport office (RTO).

In the initial stage, 300 bike taxies would be plied on city roads but the number could go up depending on the need.

A private company has been contacted for the service.

Besides being cheap, bike taxis will help reduce traffic congestion.

The bike taxies could be booked through mobile app or through toll free number and the drivers and owners need to adhere to 11 norms.

The bike taxies would be different in colour and the word “contract bike” written on it. Besides the name, mobile number and address of the owner would also have to be displayed boldly on the bike.

“Licences would be given to the driver after police verification and they would be responsible for the safety and security of the passenger, especially women passengers,” said Aditya Tripathi, additional regional transport officer.

While wearing helmet is must for both the driver and pillion rider a first aid box too has also been mandatory for the bike taxis.

Bike taxies would have to pay registration fee of ₹300 and the licence would be nontransferable.

Riders would not be allowed to carry heavy luggage.

The bike taxies were already in existence in West Bengal and Goa.

They would not only help commuters but also provide employment to many people, the ARTO said.
