Upsets galore at AITA Championsh­ip Series

LUCKNOW: It was a day of upsets at the RS Sagar Memorial AITA Championsh­ip Series here on Tuesday as the girls under-18 category, four seeded players losing in the second round at the SDS academy here on Tuesday.

The biggest upset was of top seed Madhurima Mazumdar of West Bengal as she surrendere­d before unseeded Sakshi Mishra of Chandigarh 4-1, 0-4 in straight sets. Another unseeded player Varanya Ganesh of West Bengal beat fifth seed and local challenger Advancy Goldsmith 5-3, 4- 0, UP’s Arshia beat state mate and seventh seed Arjita Dangwal 4-2, 4-1, whereas unseeded Ishika Chakma of Assam beat eighth seed Kavya Singh of UP 4-0, 4-1 in other second round matches of the day. In the boys U-18 event qualifier Akhilendra from Karnataka upset second seed Vaibhav Bisht of UP 6-0, 6-0. The other seeds also bit the dust and the only seed left in the quarterfin­als was the top seed Aditya Satpathi of Orissa.

ANSAL TO LEAD

Ansal Yadav will lead Uttar Pradesh, which had bronze medal last season, in the Senior national badminton championsh­ip to be held at Nagpur from Thursday. Other members of the team include, Abhyansh Singh, Tushar Sharma, Brijesh Yadav, Kapil Chaudhary, Amolika Singh, Taneesha Singh, Shruti Mishra, Mansi Singh, Shiwangi Singh, Tapaswini Samantroy, Faiz Hadees Khan, Ishan Singh, Siddhant Salar, Rajan Yadav.

UNDER-16 TROPHY

Jaipuria Cricket Club defeated Unity Academy by 68 runs in a league match of the Under-16 ADVANCE SPORTS Cricket Tournament.
