MOB KILLS SUSPECTED CATTLESMUG­GLER ON TRIPURABAN­GLADESH BORDER

AGARTALA: A mob in Tripura beat a 22-year-old Muslim youth early Wednesday morning suspecting him to be a cattle thief.

The incident took place around 2am under PR Bari police station limits in south Tripura district’s in Ukilpara, a village that shares border with Bangladesh.

The police have identifed the deceased as Abdul Mannan.

Local villagers claimed that Mannan had entered into the village late into the night to steal cattle.

Some locals, who said they heard some noise around 1.30am, came out to see Mannan trying to escape with the cattle.

Soon, police said, a group gathered around Mannan asked about his whereabout­s.

Police said Mannan was unable to give a convincing response to the questionin­g mob, following which the group attacked him.

Upon getting the informatio­n, officers from PR Bari police station rushed to the spot and took an injured Mannan to the nearby hospital. Around 4am, doctors declared Mannan dead.

pecting him to be a cattle smuggler. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. A case has been registered. So far, no one has been arrested in this connection,” South SP Manchak Ipper said.

One BSF officer was injured alleged cattle-smugglers when he tried to stop them along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura last month. He was airlifted to Kolkata wherein he succumbed to injuries.

Three indigenous people including one woman, suspected to be cattle-smugglers were killed and two others were injured in BSF firing at Chittabari village along India-Bangladesh border in March this year.

One alleged cattle-smuggler was killed when BSF troopers opened fire at him while on patrol at Balerdhepa village in Sepahijala district along the border in December last year.
