Gold for Rizvi, Ghatkar as Indian shooters bag rich haul

BRISBANE: Indian pistol shooters pulled off a clean sweep in the 10m air pistol event at the Commonweal­th Shooting Championsh­ip with Shahzar Rizvi, Omkar Singh and Jitu Rai winning gold, silver and bronze.

In the women’s 10m air rifle event, Pooja Ghatkar bagged a gold, while Anjum Moudgil won the silver medal.

The day started with Shahzar topping the 16-man qualificat­ion round with a score of 581. Omkar and Jitu followed him into the eight-man final with 576 and 571 respective­ly. Omkar led till the 18th shot before Rizvi took control from the 20th shot. By the end of the allotted 24 shots, Shahzar ended with 240.7, while Omkar came second with 236, Jitu won bronze with 214.1.

In the women’s 10m air rifle, Singapore’s , Jasmine Xer, topped with 419.8 ,while teammate, Martina Veloso shot 417.5 to finis second. Meghana, with 416.6, Pooja with 415.3 and Anjum with 414.1 qualified in third, fourth and sixth positions.In the final however, it was Anjum who led the field after five shots. But Pooja soon took the lead after 10 shots and held on to win with a final score of 249.8. Anjum ended with 248.7 to win silver while Veloso won bronze with a score of 224.8.

ARAVIND AT 2018 DAKAR

NEW DELHI : Rider KP Aravind, winner of the 2015 Raid de Himalaya, will take part in the 2018 Dakar Rally after debuting this year with Sherco TVS Factory Rally team. Spaniard Joan Pedrero and Adrien Metge from France will be Aravind’s teammates for the January 6-20 event. “This year, despite breaking my wrist at the first stage, I managed to compete in Dakar Rally. In 2018, I am hoping to finish the rally which in itself a huge achievemen­t,” Aravind told Hindustan Times.

SRIKANTH NOMINATED

NEW DELHI: Indian badminton’s new superstar Kidambi Srikanth, who became first Indian and only the fourth shuttler in the world to win four Super Series tournament­s in a calender year was nominated for the prestigiou­s Padma Shri award by former Sports Minister Vijay Goel.

Goel, wrote a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, recommendi­ng Srikanth for India’s fourth highest civilian award. However, the deadline for Padma nomination­s had closed on the midnight of September 15.

RUPESH GETS BRONZE

LEEDS : Rupesh Shah and Sourav Kothari settled for bronze medals at the WBL Billiards Championsh­ip. Rupesh lost his semi-final to David Causier, 1250-1203. Kothari also settled with bronze after losing to Peter Gilchrist 1250-432.
