LUCKNOW: Two girls were run over by a speeding train while crossing a railway track near Alamnagar railway station in Talkatora police area on Sunday night.

The two girls were identified as Suniti alias Neha Mishra (18), a resident of Muneshwarpuram Colony in Alamnagar, and her maternal cousin Pooja Pandey (16) of Buddheshwar in Talkatora.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the incident took place at around 7.30pm when the two girls were crossing the track after buying some household items from Rajajipuram market.

They said one of the girls slipped while crossing the track and all the items fell on the ground. While the girls were trying to collect the items, they did not notice the approaching train.

An eyewitness Rajesh Kumar said the people tried to alert the girls but it was too late by then. He said one of the girls was standing away from the track but she came closer to save her cousin and came in the train’s range.

Local residents informed the control room and alerted the local outpost of the Government Railway Police (GRP). The police said the bodies were badly mutilated and it was very difficult to identify them.

However, some locals recognised them and informed their family members about the incident. The police sent the body for post-mortem examination.
