Father in BJP won’t affect our relationship: Mukul son

KOLKATA: Despite treading on different political paths now, the ideological differences will never have a negative impact on the natural relationship between a father and the son, said Trinamool Congress legislator, Subhranshu Roy, the son of former second- in-command of Trinamool, Mukul Roy, who formally joined the BJP on November 3.

“My father’s political line is different from that of mine now. I am not in agreement with my father’s opinion or his new political line. But I do not think that this political and ideological differences will make any difference on our father- son relationship otherwise, since that relationship is eternal,” Subhransu told HT on Sunday after 48 hours his father officially joined the saffron camp.

He also rubbished rumours that in the long run he might also follow his father’s footprints and ultimately shift to the saffron camp. “Since the beginning I had been saying that I was with Trinamool Congress and will continue to be with Trinamool. I said the same think on September 25, when my father officially announced his decision to part ways with Trinamool Congress. And now after he has officially joined BJP, I am saying that Trinamool is my party and my leader is Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee,” said Subhransu, the 34- year old Trinamool MLA from Bijpur assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

Speaking to HT, Subhransu also rubbished the popular thinking that his father brought him to active politics. “It is a totally wrong line of thinking that it was my father who brought me to active politics. I came to active politics inspired by the life of Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee. She was my only icon and she will continue to be so for ever,” he said.

“Similarly, some are saying that I might miss guidance from my father. This is another wrong line of thinking. My father has never guided me and hence there is no question of missing his guidance in the coming days as well,” Subhransu said.

Meanwhile, after Roy has officially joined the BJP, rumours are floating around about the possibility of expelled CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member, Ritarabrata Banerjee also joining the saffron camp and that too through the mediation of Roy.

A statement from state BJP president in West Bengal, Dilip Ghosh, on late Saturday evening gave a positive hint in this regard. “The door of BJP is always open. If he expresses his wish and applies to work for BJP, our leadership will surely think about it,” said Ghosh when asked about the possibility of his joining BJP after Roy.

Incidentally, in September this year immediately before the Durga Puja, Roy arranged a meeting between Ritabrata and BJP’s national general secretary, Kailash Vijayvargiya, which strengthened the possibilities of his joining the saffron camp.

Ritabrata, however, could not be contacted . The expelled CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member has kept himself totally incommunicado ever since the CID filed a rape charge against him.
