Huge haul of illegal liquor in Aligarh, two arrested

HATHRAS/ ALIGARH: : Ahead of the civic polls, police and excise department made a huge haul of illegal liquor at three different places in the district and arrested two people.

It was suspected that the smuggled liquor was meant to be distribute­d during the coming civic bodies’ elections in the state.

Cops seized 16 boxes of illegal liquor from a car near Mendu town in Hathras on Monday. The driver succeeded in escaping.

Police had a tip-off that liquor was being smuggled from Haryana and Delhi for distributi­on during civic bodies’ elections.

They intercepte­d a white Maruti 800 car when it entered Mendu town but the driver escaped, leaving the car behind. Police recovered 16 boxes of Bagpiper, Mcdowell’s and Royal Stag. SHO (Mendu) Suryakant Dwivedi told HT, “Police could not arrest the bootlegger Vinod. But he will be arrested soon.”

In another incident in Jattari in Tappal area, a joint team of police and excise department raided a house. In another raid, Iglas police confiscate­d liquor from another state in Sevanpur village and arrested two youths.
