BAREILLY: A 55-year-old man was stabbed to death on Sunday morning by a group of men who suspected him to be an informer who tipped off the cops about cow slaughter in Lakhnakhera village of Rampur, police said.

Superintendent of police, Rampur, Vipin Tada said a case had been registered against seven people of whom four had been arrested.

“The deceased has been identified as Nanhe Alam of Lakhnakhera village which falls under Shehzadnagar police station. Three accused –Babbu, Mohammad Umar and Harun Ahmed – were arrested on Sunday. Another accused, Kallan, a relative of Umar, was also arrested on Monday,” he said.

The SP said police had raided the house of Mohammad Umar last month after a tip off on cow slaughter and recovered a cow.

“Umar was detained briefly after the incident. He suspected Nanhe to be the informer,” Tada said. “The family members of Nanhe and Umar also had an argument on Saturday but villagers intervened and pacified both the groups,” he said.

The SP said Umar and six of his accomplices attacked Nanhe near the village mosque.

The post-mortem report confirmed serious injuries on the head and back along with stabbing wounds in the abdomen.

“All the seven accused have been charged with criminal conspiracy and murder and other sections of the IPC,” Tada said.

The accused were produced before the court on Monday and sent to judicial custody.

A police team has been deployed in the village to maintain law and order.
