UP’s Astha Pahwa for world boxing c’ship
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh’s Astha Pahwa (69kg) has been drafted in a strong 10-member contingent to lead the country’s charge in the AIBA Youth Women’s World Boxing Championship, starting in Guwahati on Sunday.
Six pugilists from Haryana — Neetu (48kg, Jyoti (51kg), Sakshi (54kg), Shashi Chopra (57kg), Anupama (81kg) and Neha Yadav (81kg +) and one each from Mizoram (Vanlalhriapuii 60kg), Hyderabad (Niharika Gonella - 75kg) and Guwahati (Ankushita Boro - 64kg) are also part of the team.
“This is a fine lineup,” India’s coach Bergemasco Raffaele said. “Each of them is in tremendous shape and we are confident that they will bring in a number of medals,” he added.
UP EVES IN SEMIS
Uttar Pradesh eves defeated Hockey Kartnataka 5-3 to make it to the semi-finals of the 2nd Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship 2017 at Pune on Friday. Preeti Dubey (7’, 22’, 29’) and Shreya Singh (18’, 28’) scored for the winners, whereas Pavithra PA (10’), Milana KP (19’) and Bhagrashree CM (20’) scored for Hockey Karnataka. Hockey Haryana, Hockey Punjab and Hockey Maharashtra too qualified for the last four grade.
There was much to cheer about for UP Hockey as their men too made it to the last four grade in style.
Uttar Pradesh Hockey had a high scoring third quarterfinal as they defeated Hockey Odisha 8-6.
The match started with Hockey Odisha scoring first but their opponents struck twice to take a 2-1 lead at the end of first period.
In the second period, the teams had an equally attacking display which meant that the teams were tied at 4-4 after the second period but four goals in the final period saw Uttar Pradesh Hockey take the match 8-6.
Sumit Kumar (8’, 12’, 21’, 24’, 27’), Raj Kumar Pal (7’, 20’) and Ajay Yadav (25’) scored the goals for Uttar Pradesh Hockey, while Suman Kujur (6’, 16’, 19’), Rakesh Tete (17’, 29’) and Teophil Kujur (27’) scored for Hockey Odisha in an entertaining match.
