GORAKHPUR: Of Rs 150 crore that the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation (GMC) receives annually from different sources, a whopping Rs 100 crore is spent only in payment of salaries to its employees.

The remaining Rs 50 crore is used in sanitation, arrangement of drinking water and maintenance, etc.

Apart from grants that it gets from the centre and the state in the name of schemes and projects launched by them, the GMC gets funds from its own sources like collection of taxes, rent, and fees from issuing licenses, etc.

While taxes and non-taxes revenue brings around Rs 30 crore to it, government grant against sanctioned projects runs between Rs 90 crore to Rs 100 crore annually, claimed finance officer Brajesh Singh.

TWO MAJOR WORKS ARE IN PIPELINE

An under construction crematorium at Rajghat is likely to complete soon.

The Rs 3 core project was started six months back but was stalled due to flood and shortage of fund. Its second installment is

Kanha Upwan, a shelter house for keeping stray animals, is proposed to come up behind Mehwa Mandi .

The Rs 9 crore projects will help city get rid of bulls and stray animal menace.

The proposal for the project has been sent to the government and work on it will resume once the fund is released, said the chief engineer.
