Recently, my son Bhavit turned 14 and it inspired me to think about his future. What will he do when he grows up? Which then led me to think about what I could do that will help him become successful in his career? Is it high grades in school and college, branded education, heavy-duty degrees, lots of money or something else? I debated with myself and felt that none of these are an essential element for success. I thought a little further and a few different things came to my mind.

Things like how it’s essential to be passionate about success. Or, call it the hunger for achieving your dreams, because hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. Focus on the quality of your work. Whatever you do, do your best! And focus on the task at hand, rather than trying to do it all in a mediocre way. And be perseverant. If you really want something, don’t give up on it. For my first leadership role, I appeared in six internal job postings, got rejected five times in the final round, but finally made it and that changed my life!

Preparing hard when a lot is at stake, trusting yourself and solving problems through creativity are also important. So are dressing sharp, investing in your health, managing your time and getting along with people. Also remember to listen carefully. And here’s something that goes a long way — remembering names. It helps you connect with people instantly.
