Cleric, two others beaten up in Shamli-bound train
MEERUT: A Muslim cleric and two of his associates were allegedly beaten up by unidentified people in a Shamli-bound passenger train, police said on Thursday.
Superintendent of police, Baghpat, Jai Prakash said a case had been registered by ulema Gulzar Khan of Chohalda village at Baghpat Kotwali on Wednesday night.
Khan told the police that he and his associates, Israr and Abrar, were attacked by some people following an altercation while they deboarding the train. They sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The SP said the matter had been reported to the government railway police (GRP) in Baraut for investigation as the incident took place in a train.
A team of GRP officials met Khan, who is an ulema at the village mosque, to collect details of the incident.
Khan boarded the DelhiShamli passenger train at Delhi at 11 pm on Wednesday night. While he was trying to deboard the train at Aheda in Baghpat, he had an altercation with a group of passengers over opening of the door. The passengers allegedly beat up Khan. Later, irate villagers staged a protest at the railway station demanding arrest of the culprits.
Station house officer, GRP, Sukhpal Singh said investigation was on in the case and the accused were yet to be identified.
