Donkeys detained and then released from ‘jail’

-

KANPUR In a comical development, the Jalaun district jail authorities ‘detained’ a herd of donkeys last week and kept them inside the jail for four days.

The donkeys were ‘apprehended’ near the colony meant for the employees on the jail campus.

Their ‘detention’ came after they destroyed the plants in and around the jail premises. Authorities said the donkeys ate plants worth more than Rs 2 lakh in a month and injured several children, who came to play there.

In all, eight donkeys were released from the jail on Monday noon after their owners along with local BJP leaders showed up and assured that they will not be allowed to roam freely anymore.

“The animals not only ate the plants, they ruined the entire garden and injured the children of the colony,”said jail superintendent Sitaram Sharma.

:

“We personally called the owners several times and each time they said the animals didn’t belong to them. So we detained the animals on November 24,” he said.

The jail authorities said the decision was justified given the threat the animals posed to children and the plants. “We made all the arrangements for them inside; they were fed two times a day,” said a jail official.

Later, in a tweet, the UP Police said “Dear all Please do not attribute this to the @UPpolice. We have nothing to do with this.”
