3 UP cricketers make it to U19 World Cup squad

LUCKNOW: Three young cricketers from the state made it to the 16-member Indian squad that would be playing in the ICC Under-19 World Cup scheduled between January 13 and February 3 in New Zealand. They are: keeper-batsman Aryan Juyal (Moradabad), medium pacer Shivam Mavi (Noida) and leftarm spinner Shiva Singh (Moradabad).

LUCKNOW: In yet another great day in the history of cricket in Uttar Pradesh, three of its youngsters on Sunday made it to the 16-member Indian squad, which would be playing in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, scheduled to be played from January 13 to February 3 in New Zealand.

The selected players are keeper-batsman Aryan Juyal (Moradabad), medium pacer Shivam Mavi (Noida) and leftarm spinner Shiva Singh (Moradabad).

All three youngsters have done well in the domestic circuit during the last one season, and it was their performanc­e that helped All-India Junior Selection committee member and UP’s own Gyanendra Pandey to put forward their names.

Ever since Allahabad’s Mohd Kaif led India to ICC World Cup win in 2000, players from UP have been a regular face in the Indian under-19 squads at the subsequent world cups.

Shalabh Srivastava and Mritunjay Tripathi were part of the 2000 winning squad.

Present skipper of UP Ranji Trophy team Suresh Raina, along with Praveen Gupta and RP Singh made it to the Indian squad in the 2004 World Cup, followed by Ravikant Shukla and Piyush Chawla in 2006, Tanmay

Srivastava in 2008, Zahid Ali in 2010, Akshdeep Nath in 2012 and China man bowler Kuldeep Yadav in 2014 .

Shubham Mavui and Lucknow’s leggie Zeeshan Ansari were part of the Indian squad at the 2016 World Cup.

Former junior selector of UP Neeru Kapoor said, “There is no dearth of talent in the state, and that’s why UP cricketers always show their might at the internatio­nal level.”

India, along with Australia are the joint-most successful team in the history of the tournament having won the title thrice.

In the last edition of the tournament in 2016 held in Bangladesh, India lost in the final against West Indies.
